Before data can be collected, the musician and instrument must be prepared. Small reflective markers are placed over key joints and landmarks. It is these markers that the computer will track throughout the movement.

The cameras used in the motion capture are high-speed digital cameras. Each camera operates up to 500 Hz, allowing it to take 500 pictures every second.

An important part of the setup is the positioning of the cameras. The cameras must be able to see as many of the markers as possible. High-intensity spotlights are used to reflect light from the markers to the cameras.

A detailed calibration must be done before meaningful data can be acquired. This allows the analysis program to calculate the three-dimensional coordinates from a two-dimensional image. This is another very important step in the analysis.

Once the setup is complete, the cameras are ready to record the motion. The entire motion capture process it 100% digital. The information is transferred from the cameras directly into the analysis computer.
